the garden

We are incredibly lucky to have a fantastic space in which to garden….. it was a patch of bare earth when we moved in so we have created borders, raised beds, an area for fruit in addition to planting an apple tree and (most recently) putting up a mini-greenhouse on our small patio!

Looking out from the patio...

All three of us enjoy gardening and were complete novices before starting this project. We have learned so much along the way and tinker with what we grow and how we grow it every year!

The books I find most useful are… ‘Grow your own Veg’ and ‘Grow your own Fruit’, both by Carol Klein – she is no-nonsense and brief in her approach and her instructions are really easy to follow – she also recommends great varieties for first time growers! The BBC has a great site for this @ http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/tv_and_radio/growyourownveg_intheprogramme.shtml

A great book!

    The summer garden

I grow two pots of lettuces at one time - as I'm picking one lot, the other lot are growing

We bought a mini-greenhouse this year - currently houses a growbag full of tomatoes and 4 chilli plants as well as helping to raise plants from seed to ground

We are growing patty pan squash as Abbie refuses to eat courgettes, but hopefully will love these!

We moved our strawberries to give them more space this year and now have about a punnet on each of our 10 plants - under the net tunnel...

Peas growing up the wall next to some of the sweetcorn plants

Our fruit cage contains 3 loganberry plants, 2 blackcurrants, 1 gooseberry and 1 blueberry - we want another blueberry...

Raised beds house salad and early new potatoes, climbing french beans, pumpkins, sweetcorn, broad beans, celery, shallots and garlic..

Our sunset apples... we should have a bumper crop this year (4 years in)

Fee, I am in love with your website! You are a true domestic and garden goddess, and I am very jealous!
Found this via your facebook link about Jon’s One Star bread. I will not be telling Matt, as he will want to know why I cannot cook like a Fee Kempton!
Loving the photos of Abbie too. So grown up to be starting school – where has the time gone? Do come and visit us … would love to see you all. Joseph is walking now, and is a whirling dervish – and loves visitors (new people to show off in front of – just like his Dad!). We’d love to have you….

    Love Kat xx
